Brief summary
Scientific research in all fields of knowledge has been advancing in complexity and in the amount of data generated. The increase in the volume of data is creating several research challenges to consider, such as where to store it and what metadata to use. The heterogeneity of repositories and metadata standards used contributes to the complexity of finding suitable data to be reused in a research context. Regional aspects also complicate file recovery, as the same dataset can be described differently. All these facts generate the need for more flexible ways of searching research data files – in other words, retrieving information even if stored in different places or described in different ways. In fact, research data repositories often have metadata catalogs to facilitate the search and identification of desired files. To reduce heterogeneity issues, there are several researches associated with data sharing through scientific data repositories, and their metadata standards. However, there are still several gaps to be filled in the search process. The research developed in the Master's, therefore, aims to find the appropriate data sources given this heterogeneous scenario. The research specified and developed a computational platform that supports metasearch for scientific data, using semantic methods. This platform – SSM (Scientific Semantic Metasearch) – supports searching for datasets distributed in heterogeneous repositories through ontologies, thus helping to solve the problems of heterogeneity in data description. The prototype was tested in the context of a case study in agriculture, which showed evidence that the use of semantics can improve the adequacy of the searched data.
