# Last edited on 2014-09-06 21:15:19 by stolfilocal # NOT POSTED (In 2005, a gang drilled a 78m tunnel into the safe-room of a regional branch of Brazilian Central Bank, and got away with ~3.5 tons of old banknotes that were to be sent for destruction, worth ~165'000'000 BRL (~70 M USD at the time). It was claimed to be the second largest peacetime bank heist ever (but still only 1/10 of the MtGOX heist). Only 20 million BRL were recovered, apparently left behind intentionally by the thieves to slow down the investigation. (Any mental association with the 220'000 BTC "lost and found" at MtGOX is totally unwarranted of course.) Those banknotes must be now scattered all over the country, and of course cannot be seized -- but 18 of the 23 thieves are still wanted by the police, and if they are caught, whatever valuable possessions they still have, of any kind, will be taken from them and returned to the bank.)
