[/quote] One of the recurrent topis in that old sci.space USENET forum, back around 1990, was space colonisation. A subset of the users blasted NASA for not putting every cent of their budget into a crash program to create permanent, self-sufficient, fully autonomous colonies on the Moon, Mars, or outer space. That view was especially popular among the generalized "libertarians", people who hated governments, laws, and social conventions; and, rather than trying to change them, would rather flee from them. Those people loved especially the "autonomous" part of the idea, because they thought that it would allow each colony to become some flavor of a libertarian Utopia. They took it for granted that, freed from those oppressive influences, people's lives in the colonies would be happier than on Earth, and intellectual progress would be much faster. would probably be ardent bitcoiners, if bitcoin had been invented then. -- people who hated governments and laws, and, rather than trying to change them, would rather flee from them (with generous help from the government, of course)
