Brief summary
A smart city should be able to acquire information, whether through sensors or people, and use it in city management. Within this scope, we present a blockchain-based reputation system that evaluates collected information, whether from sensors or people, to ensure its veracity and activate measures when necessary. We use a distributed approach across devices at the network edge where we process the information, which is aggregated in the cloud, maintaining global consistency. This approach accelerates the handling of incidents near the point of origin, reduces latency in the communications infrastructure, and allows for responding to peak reporting volumes in short periods. To demonstrate the usability, efficiency, and scalability of our Tellme architecture proposal, we used the same devices installed in the Aveiro Tech City Living Lab (ATCLL), with emphasis on its Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). We conducted tests in a controlled laboratory environment, employing the same equipment used in the real-world scenario. The tested infrastructure consists of edge processing centers, installed in Road Side Units (RSUs), which provide wireless communication with mobile elements and fixed connections with cloud-centric processing. In addition, the RSUs host analytical devices such as cameras, radars, and LiDAR, which act as trusted sources in our reputation system. In this scenario, we measured the response times of our distributed approach compared to a centralized solution in order to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposal.
