There is # a thin radial stroke across the inner at 10:30. # # In the centre there are two human figures, apparently a man and a # woman, holding each other hands---left hand in left hand, below, # and right in right, above. The man wears a wide hat, a blouse with # long narrow sleeves, ring collar, simple belt, a skirt with # trimmed edge reaching below the knee, and boots. The woman wears # an elaborate draped dress, with ring collar, broad sleeves with # wrist bands, a small bonnet with long hair or a veil hanging down # her back, and a skirt that drags on the floor. Jim Reeds and Rene # report that the man is dressed in green, and the lady in blue. # # Between the two figures, at knee level, is a word in Roman-like # cursive script. # # Between the inner ring of text and the middle ring are 9 naked # human figures or "nymphs", all female, each standing with the # right hand on her hip, holding a star with the left hand. # # Between the middle ring and the outer ring there are 16 nymphs, # standing, each holding a star with the left hand. Four are # clothed, the rest is naked. Most are definitely women, with # visible breasts; the rest could be women or men. In most cases the # right hand is resting on the hip, but in a couple of cases the # right arm is stretched back and down. One nymph (at 04:00) has # both arms streched out horizontally. # # Standing on top of the diagram, outside the text circle, are # another 5 naked women, right hand on the hip, each holding a star. # # Two of the figures in the outer band, at 06:45 and 07:30, are # standing on top of horizontal cylinders, resembling the ones on # f70v2; and one (at 06:15) is standing on an oval carpet with a # scalloped texture and a broad dotted border. Also the first nymph at the # top (at 10:45) is standing on an hatched object which could be a # patch of grass. # # All figures are drawn in 3/4 view, between frontal and # clockwise-facing. Some of the figures have the left knee raised. # Some of the figures seem to have hats. # # Clockwise from each nymph, except the outer one at 08:30, there is # a short label (text units 程S0} for the top nymphs, 程S1} for the # outer band, and 程S2} for the inner band). # # Rene [07 Apr 1999] observes that this folio is all curled up. # # The following table summarizes the nymph and star attributes. The # "brst" column says whether the figure has visible female breasts. # The "rays" column is the number of rays in each star; a "t" means # the star has a tail. The "hand" column gives the position of the # right hand; a hour figure measn that the right arm is stretched # towards that direction relative to the nymph. # # band label place brst hand rays notes # ------- ----- ----- ---- ----- ---- ------------------------------ # inner S2.1 11:00 yes hip 6 left knee raised # inner S2.2 00:00 yes hip 7 # inner S2.3 00:45 yes belly 7 # inner S2.4 01:45 yes butt 6? # inner S2.5 03:30 yes hip 8 left knee raised # inner S2.6 05:30 yes hip 7 # inner S2.7 06:30 yes belly 7 # inner S2.8 07:15 yes butt 8 # inner S2.9 08:45 yes butt 7 # # outer S1.1 10:30 yes 08:30 7 # outer S1.2 11:00 yes belly 8 # outer S1.3 00:00 yes hip 7 t # outer S1.4 00:45 yes ribs 8 # outer S1.5 01:15 no thigh 8 flat hips; shower cap; male? # outer S1.6 02:00 yes ? 8? # outer S1.7 03:00 yes hip? ? # outer S1.8 04:00 yes waist ? # outer S1.9 05:15 yes butt 7? # outer S1.10 06:15 yes hip? 7? carpet # outer S1.11 06:45 ? 07:00 6 barrel; dress; belt; male? # outer S1.12 07:15 ? 06:30 6 barrel; dress; male? # outer S1.13 08:00 ? 06:15 ? long dress; belt; # outer S1.14 08:30 no 06:15 7 not labeled; dress; belt; male? # outer S1.15 09:00 yes 06:15 7 small; ;feet visible # outer S1.16 09:30 no hip ? # # top S0.1 10:45 ? ? ? left foot raised; grass # top S0.2 11:00 yes hip 7 # top S0.3 11:45 yes belly 8 skinny leg # top S0.4 00:15 yes butt ? left foot raised back # top S0.5 01:00 yes hip 8 # # Comments: # # The sign of Gemini, the Twins, has sometimes been represented by a # man and woman. Gemini is ??? to ???. # # The radial stroke at 10:30 in the inner ring # may mark the start of the text. # # Takeshi [20 Jan 1999] thinks that the "nymphs" on the outer band at # # 00:00 # 00:45 # 01:15 # # are a family. Specifically 00:00 is the mother, 00:45 is the # grandmother, and 01:15 is the father. In particular he thinks that # the latter has a penis. Stolfi [] thinks the "penis" could be just # the result of bad drawing (like the two elbows!), and notes that # lack of breasts is not conclusive since the nymphs on the Aries # page (f71r) have no breasts but must be female. He also thinks # that the "mother" does not seem to be older than the "daughter". # # Stolfi observes however that there is a more convincing family of # four at 07:00. # # Robert Firth reads the month name as ``Jony'' # # References: # # # Last edited on 1999-04-21 08:56:35 by stolfi
