Workflow activities usually have a very coarse granularity, are long-lived and business process dependent. The semantics of activities, including the semantics of associated invoked applications and resources, are not known by the WfMS. As a result, inconsistencies may arise from the concurrent use of shared applications/resources by the workflow activities. Thus, we propose a workflow activity synchronization mechanism to deal with these inconsistencies using a component-based solution. We present the specification of a software component called \textit{Synchronization Manager Component}, a prototype implementation and a case study carried out within the context of the WorkToDo environment. } }
