Short Biography
Hélio Pedrini is currently a full professor in the Institute of Computing at the University of Campinas, Brazil. He served as an associate professor at the Federal University of Paraná, Brazil, from July 2000 to March 2008. He worked at the Research and Development Center (CPqD) of the Brazilian Telecommunications (Telebrás) company, from March 1987 to December 1995.
He was a visiting scholar at the following institutions: the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, Canada, from January 2016 to December 2016; the Digital Imaging Research Centre at Kingston University, London, United Kingdom, from December 2014 to February 2015; the Centre for Intelligent Machines at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, from December 2013 to February 2014; the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Davis, USA, from September 2005 to August 2006.
He received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, USA, in 2000, an M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Campinas, Brazil, in 1994, and a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Campinas, Brazil, in 1986.
He holds a Research Fellowship from National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Some coordinating activities include: Coordinator of Extension from July 2023 to June 2025, Associate Coordinator of Extension from July 2021 to June 2023, Chair of the Department of Information Systems from April 2017 to August 2020, Coordinator of the Undergraduate Computer Engineering Course from July 2014 to June 2015, Associate Coordinator of the Undergraduate Computer Engineering Course from July 2013 to June 2014, Coordinator of the Undergraduate Computer Science Course from July 2011 to June 2013, Associate Coordinator of the Undergraduate Computer Science Course from July 2009 to June 2011, and Coordinator of the Visual Informatics Laboratory since 2009. He received the Academic Excellence Award (2018), the Didactic Excellence Award (2019), and the "Zeferino Vaz" Academic Recognition Award (2020) from the University of Campinas.
He has advised several undergraduate and graduate students. He has published numerous papers in conferences and journals, as well as co-authored book chapters and books in his research fields. He has received financial support for research projects from various funding agencies. He has served as a member of technical committees and as a reviewer for several conferences and journals. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC).
His research interests include image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, computational geometry, computer graphics, and scientific visualization.
