The GeoTOOls Project

GEOgraphic information systems Tools and techniques using the Object Oriented paradigm

Overview

GeoTOOls is a joint project of researchers of the Computer Science Departments at two public universities in Brazil (UNICAMP and UFPE) and the Image Processing Department of the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The project involves researchers in databases, algorithm design and analysis, software engineering and image processing. Its goals are to develop prototypes and tools to solve specific problems in geoprocessing, investigating the use of object oriented techniques in modelling and implementing GIS environments. These institutions are conducting these activities using the O2 Object Oriented Database as an experimentation software development platform.

GeoTOOls is essentially a database project, and as such its main concerns are in the modelling and specification of object oriented databases to support GIS environments and applications. GeoTOOls is an offspring of the multi-institutional ( GEOTEC ) project.

The project is financed by the European Community (contract ITDC 116-82152). It was launched in June 1995 and will proceed for two years.

Overall goals

GeoTOOls concentrates its activities in four different layers of a geoprocessing system:
