About the Institute
Scope
The Institute of Computing (formerly DCC-IMECC)
is UNICAMP's main teaching and research unit for the areas
of information technology and theoretical computer science.
A bit of history
The Institute's origins can be traced back to 1969, when UNICAMP opened an undergraduate course in Computer Science. The first of its kind in Brazil, it was the model for many similar courses throughout the country.
Later that year the Computer Science Department (DCC) was officially created within the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (IMECC). In March 1996 the Department ceased being part of IMECC, and was reorganized as a separate Institute within UNICAMP. Reorganization was formally completed in March 1997, with the inauguration of the first directors.
Courses
The Institute currently offers two undergraduate
programs: Bachelor in Computer Science (evening) and
Computer Engineering (full day, in partnership with
FEEC-UNICAMP).
The graduate studies
programs lead to Masters and Doctoral degrees in Computer Science.
These programs have consistently received the highest marks in
evaluations by government funding agencies and other independent
institutions, and attract students from all over Latin America.
Faculty
One of the strongest points of the Institute is the quality and variety of its faculty. The Institute currently has 44 active faculty members, (of which 34 have a doctoral degree and full-time affiliation), trained at the best universities around the world, whose research activities span almost all areas of computer science and technology. Many are international renowned in their respective specialties.
