The deployment of dependable computing systems heavily relies on
various forms of hardware and/or software redundancies that embody
the fault tolerance capabilities of the system. For a pragmatic
and objective assessment of the efficiency (coverage) of the fault
tolerance mechanisms, it is essential to exercise them against
the typical sets of “inputs” they are a meant to cope with: the
faults and resulting errors; hence, the rationale for controlled
fault injection experiments.
The talk will first identify a generic framework for conducting
such fault injection experiments and will then provide an
historical perspective to review the main body of work in the
domain. By way of examples, it will emphasize the recent advances
made towards the definition of dependability benchmarks. Finally,
current trends and challenging issues will be identified and
discussed.

Jean Arlat received the Docteur-Engineer and Docteur ès-Sciences
degrees from the Toulouse National Polytechnic Institute (INPT)
in 1979 and 1990, respectively. He currently holds a position
of Directeur de Recherche with CNRS, the French National
Organization for Scientific Research, within the Dependable
Computing and Fault Tolerance research group at LAAS-CNRS.
Since February 2007, he is coordinating the area on Critical
Information Systems, one of the four scientific areas that
characterize the research activities carried out at LAAS. His
research interests focus on the design of hardware-and-software
dependable and secure systems and their assessment, including
both analytical modeling and fault injection approaches. From
1999 to 2005, he has chaired the IFIP Working Group 10.4 on
Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance. In particular, he has
fostered the launch of the 1st WG 10.4 ‘s SIG on “Dependability
Benchmarking”.
